Masters in the development of optimised embedded systems for tracking and localisation Contract : Full Time/Fixed Term The Tyndall National Institute is a world leader in the development of industry aligned research in the development of embedded systems for use in the body, on the body and around the body. Working closely with a global range of industry and academic partners, our applied research technology agenda is helping to develop new products in Ireland and Internationally to achieve Excellence in Research.The WSN group within the HCS cluster has recently secured funding from the European Union to deliver on next generation smart wireless sensing systems for use in Cultural Heritage applications – tracking and monitoring of valuable artifacts in Museums in Europe.The Wireless Sensor Network Group , Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for appointments as a Postgraduate Masters student to develop novel technologies and Embedded Systems for tracking and localisation in the built environment.Reporting to the WSN Head of Group and the student supervision committee, this is an exciting opportunity to develop miniaturized low power consumption precision tracking technologies as part of a Postgraduate research program.The candidate will be required to implement the system specification, design and deployment of deployable prototype embedded systems incorporating the necessary tracking technologies, Energy Harvesting, communications, processing, sensor interfacing and power supply conditioning necessary to enable precision tracking of museum artifacts incorporating optimized algorithms, communications protocols, device driver development and modification, circuit design, RFs system simulation and design, PCB layout, firmware development using C and other programming languages, optimsation algorithms, product performance characterization and system testing. Required Skills and experience Electronic system design schematic and PCB layout capability, Prototype development characterization and test experience Applied research project planning, good project management, scheduling capability, report writing, documentation and communication skills for interaction with internal and external partners are essential as well as a high level of technical competency in the area of wireless embedded system design. The candidate needs to be highly motivated and innovative, practical, self-managed and achievement orientated.The ideal candidate will typically have an Honours degree in Engineering or equivalent and at least 1 years project experience in Embedded Systems R&D. Key Responsibilities Develop high grade electronic prototype precision tracking systems Develop and deliver project tasks, deliverables including reports, process documentation, IP capture (both know-how), technical publications and presentations for both internal and external customers. Publish research outputs in high impact Journals and conferences Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Health and Safety standards and with Tyndall’s Quality Management System with a focus on continuous improvement. Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post. Essential Criteria Honours Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Science, Physics or related technical discipline or equivalent. Typically 2 years of hands-on experience in embedded system development Has an understanding of scientific engineering concepts in terms of embedded system prototype development (PCB design, Firmware development and Electronic system integration Capability in communications encompassing report writing, process documentation, operating procedures, publications and presentations.Desirable Criteria Desirable Criteria Proven strong track record of working independently Background: Tyndall and the Wireless Sensor Network Group Tyndall National Institute (Tyndall), www.tyndall.ie , is Ireland’s largest research Centre, specializing in defined areas of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).The mission for Tyndall can be summarized as follows: To be a Centre of Excellence in Information and Communications Technology research, development and graduate training, recognized internationally for the quality of its outputs in materials, devices and systems, and its creation of new opportunities for Ireland’s economic growth.Within Tyndall the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) team is developing wireless sensor network solutions for a variety of applications and deployment scenarios.
