Principal Scientist - Integrated Magnetics for Power Supply-on-Chip (PwrSoC)

Location:
Cork, Co. Cork
Description:

Principal Scientist - Integrated Magnetics for Power Supply-on-Chip (PwrSoC) Contract Type: Full Time/Fixed Term Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems. Specialising in both electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems – we are globally leading in our core research areas of: Smart sensors and systems Optical communication systems Mixed signal and analog circuit design Microelectronic and photonic integration Semiconductor wafer fabrication Nano materials and device processing Tyndall National Institute, at University College Cork, has achieved world-wide recognition for the impact of its research on Integrated Magnetics-on-Silicon and its global thought-leadership in the emerging area of Power Supply on Chip (PwrSoC) for efficient power management in portable electronics and high performance computing applications. This has been recently recognised with international awards from both IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and EARTO (the European Association for Research and Technology Organisations).Traditionally, magnetic components tend to be very bulky but for switch mode power conversion, the value of the inductance required is reduced by using a high switching frequency (20 – 200 MHz). This miniaturisation allows for inductors and transformers to disappear onto silicon (MagIC) which utilises thin-film magnetic materials to deliver magnetics-on-silicon devices that can operate efficiently at high frequencies. MagIC technology can dramatically reduce energy usage of microprocessors and other system on chip (SOC) platforms thereby extending battery life in portable electronics by up to 50%.Funding for the research has been provided by Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and EU programmes. Tyndall has also successfully engaged with a number of global companies in the licensing and transfer of the technology. We now wish to hire a Principal Scientist to expand the activities of our Integrated Magnetics research programme. Your role will include management and delivery of magnetic materials R&D and materials process optimisation using both existing and novel materials. A major part of the research will focus on the development of improved nanostructured/amorphous magnetic materials with reduced high frequency losses. You will also have the opportunity to manage a dynamic team of young researchers with expertise in various aspects of magnetics materials development and their applications in power delivery. The role will also include consideration of test and characterisation of materials and devices as well as associated circuits, system integration and applications. Key Responsibilities Manage and sustain a growing research team in integrated magnetics technology, components, circuits and applications generating world-leading, high impact, research outputs that will deliver highly trained graduate students, innovative technology platforms, commercialisable intellectual property and key publications and presentations in leading journals and international conferences. Provide leadership, management, coaching, mentoring and career development for an experienced team of professional research staff, and postgraduate students. Secure sustainable funding from both industry and public organisations, at national and European level, in order to grow the team and to ensure its long-term sustainability. Lead the definition and implementation of the Team’s strategic research agenda and roadmap in line with Tyndall’s strategic research plans and in conjunction with Tyndall senior management. Attract and recruit world-class research staff and post-graduate students in order to grow the team. Manage liaison with other Tyndall teams including Tyndall Fab, Business Development, Test and Characterisation, Packaging and Failure Analysis. Lead, define, manage and deliver project tasks, deliverables including reports, process documentation, intellectual property capture (both know-how and patents), technical publications and presentations for both internal and external customers. Build high impact, collaborative relationships with world-leading researchers, in Tyndall and in both national and international academia and industry. Flexibility and adaptability in provision of technical support including a willingness to work flexible hours maybe required. Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Health and Safety standards and with Tyndall’s Quality Management System with a focus on continuous improvement.
