Senior Engineer in Photonic Packaging Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term The Photonics Packaging Group at the Tyndall Institute invites applications for an exciting position as Senior Engineer in Photonic Packaging and Process Development. The role will primarily focus on leading critical projects in the area of photonic package design and process development. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of innovative photonic packaging processes and the implementation of automation routines on FL300 and CL1500 packaging systems. Additionally, they will be responsible for the training and development of engineers using advanced packaging tools. They will also support critical reporting activities, including the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and proposals to industry and public funding agencies. International travel may be required for attendance at major conferences and exhibitions to present technical advancements. Key Responsibilities Lead large-scale projects in the areas of photonic package design and process development. Manage projects to ensure they meet technical milestones and are delivered on time. Lead and develop new optical packaging processes with a focus on automation and scale-up. Design optical packaging solutions and collaborate closely with optical packaging researchers. Prepare and submit technical reports on research projects. Support the preparation and submission of new research proposals. Champion training and development of engineers using advanced packaging tools. Ensure compliance with Tyndall Quality Management system and Health and Safety standards. Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and ensure the required Health and Safety standards. Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post. Essential Criteria PhD qualified with typically four years of academic and/or industrial experience. Experience in developing alignment and packaging routines using ficonTEC alignment systems (e.g. FL300 and/or CL1500) Experience in optical packaging processes for fiber array attachment to SOI/InP-based PICs Experience characterising optoelectronic devices and silicon PICs/nano-structures, including optical calibration, warpage measurements, fiber coupling and laser alignment Demonstrate a track record of collaborating with both academic and industrial partners and managing large-scale research projects. Demonstrate an ability to lead photonic or electronic technical concepts from initial design through to full prototypes. Track record of managing multi-partner research projects. Experience presenting research to a large technical audience. Excellent communication and technical report-writing skills. Desirable Criteria Evidence of creative skills/creativity Experience in the mechanical design of photonic systems using advanced CAD design tools. Experience in using photonics for a range of application areas, especially in communications. Experience in electrical photonic packaging processes. Experience in optical simulations and modelling of photonics systems Experience managing European-funded research projects such as H2020 or Horizon projects. Experience with reporting project updates, such as European project reviews, including presenting results to the European Commission and reviewers. Experience in EU proposal writing.
