Research Assistant in Coherent Optical Communication Systems

Location:
Cork, Co. Cork
Description:

Research Assistant in Coherent Optical Communication Systems Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term The Photonic Systems Group (PSG) at Tyndall National Institute and University College Cork is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant (RA) to join a dynamic team that is developing coherent optical communications systems for future access networks. The successful candidate will help develop, model and experimentally demonstrate novel coherent communication system architectures in PSG’s advanced photonic communications Laboratory. The project is funded in part by IPIC, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre in Photonics, which is a 200-person strong centre with 40 industry partners which specialises in both photonics and electronics, spanning materials, devices, circuits and systems. The Project The project will develop new approaches to coherent communication for access networks, and specifically for future multi-user passive optical networks (PONs) operating at 100Gb/s and higher data rates. A key focus will be on the use of spectral slicing, in which a high bandwidth signal is coherently sliced or divided across several parallel channels utilising lower bandwidth, commodity optoelectronic components, which has the potential advantage of reducing cost. Signal reconstruction and recovery is performed using digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. One of the main challenges to be addressed will be to develop spectral slicing approaches for the upstream channels in PONs, which operate in burst mode to enable time-sharing across the multiple users. You will have the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary research team consisting of communication system researchers, integrated circuit designers, and photonic packaging and device developers. In addition: Work as a highly valuable research team member in a world-class technology centre that has a dynamic, vibrant and self-driven work environment that focuses on high impact research results that are strongly aligned to industry needs. Benefit from a superb career development and advancement opportunity generating outputs that are highly visible to the academic and industry optical communication research ecosystem. Publish your work at leading conferences such as the Optical Fiber Communications conference in the USA or the European Conference on Optical Communications and in leading IEEE/Optica journals etc. Attend training courses and workshops as required by the role and use the latest industry test and measurement equipment and system modelling tools. Benefit from competitive salary and conditions including 23 Days of annual leave, and 10 public holidays. The post would suit BEng/MEng-level researchers or those who have completed, but not yet been awarded the PhD degree, who have knowledge and experience of coherent optical communications systems and DSP. Knowledge of spectral slicing techniques will be an added advantage. Key Responsibilities The candidate is expected to be creative, self-motivated, and should help create an efficient and friendly atmosphere within the PSG team and beyond to all teams at IPIC and Tyndall. Develop numerical models of the proposed burst mode, spectrally-sliced PON system and use these models to optimise the system design and predict likely performance. Build an experimental laboratory prototype of the optimised burst mode, spectrally sliced PON system and use this to validate the concept and test its high-speed data transmission performance over an optical fibre link. Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research, as directed by and with the support of senior PSG research staff. Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and ensure the required Health and Safety standards. Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post. Essential Criteria Batchelor or Master degree, or completed but not yet awarded PhD, in Electronic Engineering or a related relevant discipline, coupled with significant relevant photonic systems research experience. Evidence of successful execution of projects involving numerical modelling and experimental implementation and test of coherent optical fibre communication systems. Knowledge of DSP as applied to coherent optical communication systems. Knowledge of software used for experimental automation (e.g. LabView), optical system modelling (e.g. VPI) and general mathematical and data analysis (e.g. Matlab, Python) Ability to work independently on the design and test of challenging optical communication system concepts. Deep knowledge of the underlying concepts of optical fibre communications. The successful candidate will be highly analytical with good interpersonal and organisational skills. Desirable Criteria Evidence of creative skills/creativity Knowledge and hands-on experience of spectral slicing in optical communications. Knowledge of optical networks and, specifically, PONs. Interest in and experience of education and public engagement with science. Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.Appointment will be made on the appropriate point in the following IUA Researcher Salary Scale: Research Assistant (€31,150 to €41,033) per annum.
