Principal Researcher - Integrated Power Electronics Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term Tyndall National Institute is an international thought-leader in research in integrated/miniaturized power technology platforms for next generation electronics systems for smart phones, portable computing and energy for the Internet of Things (IoT). Our research on integrated magnetics (on silicon, embedded in PCB) and PMIC (Power Management ICs) has won international awards, has been licensed to major multinationals and has recently been incorporated into mass produced portable computing equipment.Our research excellence and industry collaborations are evidenced through our leadership in EU projects such as ENABLES ( www.enables-project.eu ) and Energy ECS ( www.energyecs.eu ), the SFI CONNECT Research Centre CONNECT ( https://connectcentre.ie/ ), co-founding of the International EnerHarv Workshop ( www.EnerHarv.com ) and the founding of PwrSoc, the IEEE/PSMA International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip ( http://pwrsocevents.com/the-history-of-the-pwrsoc-workshop/ ), contributions to many international technology roadmaps (IEEEE HIR, IEEE IRDS, iNEMI, ECS-SRIA, PSMA PTR,) and links with US-based industry association PSMA ( www.psma.com ).Tyndall offers this unique and exciting opportunity for a Principal Researcher in Integrated Power Electronics for our ICT4EE (ICT for Energy Efficiency) and Magnetics Groups . We seek an experienced technical leader to drive the integration of power electronics components and circuits with miniaturized magnetics-based technology platforms such as: PSiP (power supply in package) and PwrSoC (power supply on chip) energy harvesting-based eSiP (energy source in package) devices and systems for ultra lower-power (ULP) management of IoT edge devices IVR (integrated voltage regulators) to enhance processor performance for computing, portable electronics and data servers Leveraging a strong power electronics circuit pedigree , the position will present the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to foster and drive disruptive inter-disciplinary research collaborations with experts in microelectronics, magnetics, interconnect and packaging and associated thermomechanical issues to create integrated power solutions.For IoT applications , the position presents the opportunity to address the challenge of powering the energy 1 trillion sensor economy, minimizing power consumption and exploiting micro-power energy harvesting to extend wireless sensor node (WSN) battery life. PCB-embedded and on-silicon miniaturization and optimization platforms will also be developed for integrated power delivery in portable electronics, computing and data-centre server applications. Both research programmes will involve strategic collaborations with our Silicon design centre https://www.mcci.ie/research/ If successful, you will become a key member of Tyndall’s research leadership team further building our international profile in “power IoT” & “integrated magnetics”. Key Responsibilities Drive both the electrical and packaging design of miniaturized power solutions from ULP to IVR. Specify the electrical performance requirements of advanced magnetic components appropriate for PSiP, PwrSoC. Coordinate cross-functional teams to prototype, fabricate, test and integrate systems which involve, chipscale power semis, advanced substrate based or on Si magnetics, and advanced controller IC chiplets. Deliver research outputs that result in high impact-factor journal publications, advanced functional prototypes, simulation models, patents and technology licenses. Supervision, recruitment and development of graduate students, engineers and researchers. Operate under Tyndall’s Health and Safety and Quality Systems protocols. Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system. Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards. Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post. Essential Criteria Engineering degree in Electronics or equivalent industry research experience, ideally with interdisciplinary collaboration with power electronics experts across mechanical, packaging, thermal disciplines, with relevant post graduate experience. Strong Experience in PCB Layout and 3D Integrated Packaging Design Strong experience in Circuit Design and Simulation Strong experience with switch-mode power converter design A significant tier-one publishing and/or patenting record Demonstrated capability in managing, supervising and undertaking research projects Evidence of excellent analytical, organizational, communication, project management & time management skills motivated by ambition. Desirable Criteria Evidence of creative skills/creativity Experience in packaging and heterogeneous system integration for power electronics Strong experience with magnetic component device design is a distinct advantage. Track record in delivering world-leading research in as many as possible of the following – (i) electronic design, (ii) modelling, (iii) test, (iv) characterization, (v) optimization and integration of power solutions for ULP wireless IoT edge and/or IVR point of load devices. Capability of designing and modelling of magnetic devices using CAD software, such as Ansoft Maxwell or HFSS or Thermal CAD. Good understanding of PCB/substrate design and construction techniques. Appointment may be made on the Grade 7 Admin I Scale (B) range € 80,332 - € 105,823 per annum.
