About the Team The Data Platform and Observability (DPOE) team enables insight into the operation and performance of Workday's scalable distributed computing infrastructure and application environment. Our large-scale distributed data platform digests hundreds of terabytes of structured and unstructured data in the form of billions of messages produced daily by Workday applications and infrastructure services. We develop software and fully coordinated solutions for the entire data pipeline from data collection to visualization and reporting. If you enjoy writing efficient software, crafting innovative capabilities by integrating the latest cloud-native technologies, and tuning and scaling large distributed systems, you will enjoy working with us! About the Role The Messaging, Streaming and NoSQL team is a full-service Engineering and DevOps team. We architect and provide messaging, streaming, and NoSQL solutions such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, and Redis to internal teams to enable new Workday features. We develop Java client libraries that make it easy for other teams to use our solutions. We develop automation to deploy and run hundreds of clusters, and we also operate and tune our clusters as well. As a team member you will play a key role in improving our services and encouraging their adoption within Workday's compute infrastructure. As a member of this distributed systems team you will design and build new capabilities from inception to deployment to exploit the full power of the core middleware infrastructure and services, and work hand in hand with our application and service teams! About You You are a senior software engineer with distributed systems background and significant experience in distributed technologies in a cloud native environment. You have independently led product features and deployed large scale Apache Kafka, Redis, RabbitMQ or Apache Pulsar clusters. Basic Qualifications 5+ years of development and DevOps experience in designing and operating large-scale deployments of distributed systems in a cloud native environment. 3+ years of leading a distributed streaming, messaging or database services at scale, right from concept to deployment and maintenance. 2+ years of Kubernetes operator development and delivery 7+ years of software engineering experience using one or more of the following: Ruby, Golang, Python, Java, Scala. Other Qualifications A consistent track record of technical project leadership and success involving collaborators and interested partners across the enterprise. Expertise in developing distributed system software and deployments that perform well and degrade gracefully under excessive load. Expertise with configuration management and service deployment on Kubernetes via Helm and ArgoCD. Development experience with a wide range of programming languages, for example, Java, C/C++, Erlang, Python, Golang, etc. Experience learning complex open source service internals via code inspection. Extensive experience with best-of-breed software development tools including CI/CD and methodologies like Agile Experience with Linux system internals and tuning. Experience with distributed system performance analysis and optimization. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to explain esoteric technical details clearly to engineers without a similar background.
