PhD – Security of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) enabled Wireless Networks. Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term About us Tyndall Wireless Communications Laboratory ( wilab/ ): Tyndall’s Dublin-based Wireless Communications Laboratory addresses the fundamental research challenges in future wireless communication systems, with focus both on theoretical and practical aspects of the classical communication topics RF, Access, and Protocols, as well as cross domain topics on AI and Quantum research, which will gain increasing importance in the future.The resulting innovations will enable ultra-flexible, ultra-fast, and ultra-reliable low latency communication for next generation IoT communications, Wi-Fi, 5G, 6G and beyond. The Research Area Future wireless networks will support many emerging services, such as, remote healthcare, indoor localization, factory automation, Wi-Fi sensing, unmanned aerial vehicles, and autonomous driving. These applications demand precise sensing and localization. Traditionally, sensing and communication systems are designed separately. However, due to the rapid proliferation of wireless devices and mobile services, the frequency spectrum is becoming increasingly congested. Therefore, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems are becoming popular. ISAC designs sensing and communication functionality jointly by considering the shared spectrum, energy, and hardware resources. As information-bearing signals are reused for the purpose of sensing, the sensing signal itself is susceptible to eavesdropping by targets. Therefore, the aim of the project is to secure the ISAC transmission from eavesdropping. Deviating from the traditional methods of providing security through cryptography which require secret key management and heavy computation, the security in ISAC will be provided at signal level through physical layer security (PLS) techniques. What we offer The PhD student will be based in Dublin at Tyndall’s Dublin-based Wireless Communications Laboratory. The PhD student will be co-supervised by Dr. Chinmoy Kundu and Prof. Holger Claussen. The post offers a superb opportunity for an ambitious individual to work collaboratively on exciting, cutting-edge science at the interface between academia and industry and across multiple teams. There will be conference travel funds available for attending national and international conferences. There will be possibilities of collaborating with renowned researchers/faculties across the world specially with the wireless communications/ISAC research group of University College London, UK. There will be possibilities of travelling to University College London, UK for research collaborations. Key Responsibilities Doing research in wireless communications. Disseminate research achievements through publications in primary journals, at conferences, and in-house forums. Participate in developing future research initiatives within the group Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system. Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards. Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post. Essential Criteria Master’s degree or equivalent in Communications Engineering, Digital Communications, Wireless Communications, Signal Processing, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline. Fundamental knowledge of wireless communication channels and systems. Strong analytical and mathematical skills. Good communication skills, both written and oral. Desirable Criteria Background in convex optimization/numerical optimization will be added advantage. Knowledge of programming tools such as MATLAB/ Python/Julia. Publication record in IEEE or ACM journals and conference publications. Ability to engage in the wider research activities of the research group. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to perform in diverse cultures. The annual stipend is €22,000 pa.
